If you are employed, and looking for a better opportunity, you are faced with
the challenge of conducting your search while still working a forty hour week at
your current job. Careful planning will insure the most efficient use of your
limited time. Think of your job search as a part-time job. If you are
unemployed, it becomes easy to fall victim to the scores of distractions you may
face; your challenge will be to remain focused on your task. Think of your job
search as a full-time job, with the accompanying responsibility. Do not "call
out sick" to your job search, unless it is for a reason that would have kept you
out of your regular job. Regardless of how much time you are dedicating each
week to the search, it is important to stay consistent. Once you get started and
gain some momentum, you'll be on your way.
>> A successful job search, like any complex project, requires careful
organization and a commitment of both time and effort.
Set definitive goal, both incremental and long-term. Your long-term goal,
obviously, is your desired position or career. As you plan your schedule, each
teak should systematically bring you one step closer to achieving that goal. Use
incremental goals to keep you motivated during the process. An example of an
incremental goal might be to contact 10 potential employers each week. These
goals should be attainable, but challenging.
It is also important to learn as much as possible about the hiring process.
The deeper your understanding of the methods and objectives of the hiring
managers, the more success you will have in positioning yourself.
After you have set your goals and created a plan of action, you are ready to
start the search. Keep detailed written records of your contacts, and more
importantly, make yourself accountable by checking these records against your
goals.
A detailed plan and an unwavering commitment to succeed will give your job
search a running start. |
